So last night my hatch wasn't latching shut on my wagon. Today I got the latch working so it stays shut, but I guess a piece popped out (the little black doohickey shown above) and now it won't lock. Im not terribly concerned with anyone breaking into my car, but knowing it doesn't work really bugs me. I can't seem to figure out where the little black clip goes or if there are any other pieces that fell out that I didn't find. Any suggestions?

There should be another part in there that the pin will go into - the black clip keeps the pin from coming out of that part. When you find the other piece (should be in the same general area the pin can reach) you should be able to see how they go together. Hopefully. :)

Yeah you need that important little 3 inch rod with the one hole on the end that the smaller rod goes into then that metal thingy holds that in. The way it works is the three inch rod pushes into the latch deal and when you push on the outside button to open it it hits the rod and then pushes a lever and it opens. If you hatch still opens, then the 3 inch rod is still in there. To make is lock the rod is pulled out a bit and then it can't hit the lever and the hatch won't open. Usually where the rod slips into the latch deal is where they break as that is pot metal. Sounds like yours isn't broke, you just need to put it back together.

Well maybe now that I know what I'm looking for, I'll get it figured out. Maybe I should get some new tailgate supports first do I don't have to hold it open with my head while I work.
Wish me luck!

On a side note, regarding the tailgate. My taillights work, and my license plate lights work, but my reverse lights, rear wiper, and defrost do not work. Is it more likely that they are unrelated issues? (fuses, reverse light switch, wiper motor) or that the wiring harness needs to be replaced? Where is the best place to start troubleshooting?

Taillight /reverse light wiring doesn't go through the gate. So I would guess reverse lights are a seperate issue, but I would take a visual inspection of the tailgate wire harness where it comes in at the tailgate hinges. The few that I've seen that were bad wore out there and you could see the wire insulation was missing/coming apart.

For the reverse lights, if you've checked the bulbs...perhaps its the connection/reverse switch on the tranny thats bad.

Good luck...I hate tracing down electrical issues. :(

Lol, love these old cars. Went out this morning to find that my drivers side door handle was no longer working. After removing the door panel and door handle assembly, here's what I found...
Image
The pin had popped out of the assembly. So using a little bit of ingenuity and a coat hanger, I MacGyvered my way into a working door handle again...

We'll see if this holds long enough for me to get a new assembly. Thinking about hitting up Pick-n-Pull this weekend. I also need the assembly for the rear drivers side door as it hasn't worked since I got the car. Glad to finally be getting dirty and working on Delilah though. Wish me luck!

That is typical 240, what I use is a bolt and nut to fix that.

...wow. That seems like such a better fix than a coat hanger. And cheaper than a door handle assembly. Thanks for the tip.
