New 945T tags expired on PO, and I'm installing the cat and exhaust from the wreck to pass DEQ. Will they let me test it or hassle me for unregistered car? I can't register the car w/o DEQ cert.

Round trip is to test station is under 5 miles, I'm more likely to be struck by a meteor than to get pulled over. I'm loath to pay $30 for a trip permit (and stand in line at DMV). But ticket is $ and maybe even a moving violation.

Can I file for Registration first w/o the DEQ cert and thus have some type of paperwork to cover my *ss?

Thanks.

Don't worry about the trip permit, they will let you go through without any registration/anything. You should be fine. I did the same thing a couple months ago with my 760 that hadn't been on the road for two years.

You might want to call DMV. They won't give you any trouble when you get there, but a Police Type will probably cite you along the route. That being said, I'd risk it. I drove a tired 122 from PDX to the Coast last spring with 10 year old outdated tags without a second look from the Law. Do you "feel lucky?''.

yeah, if you are driving a cop might give you a ticket. but if it's a short trip and your a good driver... DEQ won't do anything though.

pretty sure if you explain where you're headed they'll let you go.

and even if you get a ticket, you'd just need to show up in court with valid tags/registration and they'll drop the ticket.

If you're just driving to the DEQ, don't sweat it. I wouldn't drive around town with expired tags (well...much), but if it passes you can always pull out and affix the stickers right there.

They wont sell you tags if the car isn't registered to you...If you've already paid the $78 assuming its a oregon car then you can buy tags once you pass

You can go thru as many times as you'd like

Thanks, bureaucracy and reality don't always agree. Sounds like I'm safe at the DEQ testing station, but just need to avoid a ticket getting there. With the cert. I'll only need to go DMV once and get the title and registration switched.

Broke down and bought a trip permit. Got tired of waiting for good weather to install the cat and exhaust, needed a modern car for a road trip to the beach with my boys. So a day later the weather clears and I installed the exhaust! The 30 bucks doesn't suck as much as sitting in the DMV. Excruciating.
